Are robots taking over?

Late in 2022, a popular chatbot was released for a limited time free for the public to test, ChatGPT. It quickly developed a huge following and many people began wondering if AI would be taking over.

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the ability of a computer or machine to perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, and decision-making. AI systems can be trained to perform specific tasks by processing large amounts of data and using algorithms to identify patterns and make decisions based on that analysis.

There are several types of AI, including:

  1. Rule-based AI: This type of AI follows a set of predefined rules to make decisions.

  2. Machine learning: This type of AI uses algorithms to analyze and learn from data, without being explicitly programmed.

  3. Natural language processing (NLP): This type of AI enables machines to understand, interpret, and generate human language.

  4. Deep learning: This type of AI uses complex neural networks to analyze and learn from large amounts of data.

AI has the potential to revolutionize many industries and has already been applied in various applications, such as language translation, image and speech recognition, and autonomous vehicles. There is ongoing debate about the potential risks and dangers associated with artificial intelligence (AI). While AI has the potential to bring significant benefits and efficiencies to many industries and has already been applied in a variety of applications, there are also concerns about the potential negative impacts of one potential risk of AI is the possibility of job displacement, as AI systems may be able to perform tasks that are currently done by humans. This could lead to job loss and economic disruption, particularly for those who are employed in positions that are easily automated. 

My main thoughts on this are that if a job is so easily replaced It’s probably not worth having a human do it and we need to focus human energy on upskilling. But right now, I don’t think this is the whole story of where we are with AI technology at this current time. Let me show you why.

The issue here is that neither Grace Hopper nor Robert Noyce is Black.

I wanted to give ChatGPT another chance, so I asked instead for African American tech leaders and still got incorrect information.

Another concern is the potential for AI to be used for malicious purposes, such as in the development of autonomous weapons or the manipulation of information. However, I would say to that that AI is unable to have thoughts, feelings, and bias and is merely showing the bias and manipulation of the user who created it.  With bias in mind, there are also concerns about the potential for AI systems to perpetuate or amplify existing biases and injustices if they are not designed and developed with diversity and inclusion. This seems to be true ChatGPT couldn’t give me information on Black or African American Tech leaders correctly.

Overall, it is important for the development and use of AI to be guided by ethical principles and for ongoing discussions about the potential risks and benefits of AI and how to mitigate potential negative impacts.  It can’t replace jobs currently however some experts believe that automation, including the use of robots, will eventually lead to significant job displacement, particularly in industries that are easily automated. Others believe that automation will create new job opportunities, as robots and other technologies can increase efficiency and productivity, leading to economic growth and new jobs.

It is likely that automation, including the use of robots, will lead to some level of job displacement in certain industries. There is still a long way to go.  However, it is also likely that new job opportunities will be created due to automation as it grows. It is important for workers and organizations to be prepared for the potential impacts of automation and to consider how to adapt and reskill in the face of changing job markets.
